ICCOBAUK/EUROPE ANNUAL CONVENTION 2025!

The dangers of insularity and narrow thinking in tribal enclaves cannot be overstated. Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly members of our ICCOBA community, must recognise the transformative power of diversity. Clinging to narrow tribal affiliations limits growth and diminishes the collective value we bring to society.

Taking ICCOBA as a case study, many members gravitate almost exclusively towards their own set groups. While this tendency may stem from comfort and familiarity, it restricts opportunities for broader engagement and development. True growth demands stepping beyond such boundaries, engaging with other sets and wider networks. What may seem insurmountable alone often becomes achievable when shared among peers — as the saying goes, two heads are better than one. Scripture also reminds us: “Come, let us reason together.”

Building strong networks is particularly crucial in the diaspora. ICCOBA members in the UK and Europe would do well to learn from ICCOBA USA, where deliberate efforts to foster connections have yielded measurable benefits. Connections within such associations often open unexpected doors, professionally and personally.

We should also draw inspiration from the world’s strongest alumni bodies — Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge — where affiliation is a powerful enabler of success. These institutions thrive because they embrace progressive cultures, encourage intellectual curiosity, and prioritise collective advancement over parochial interests. That is the model we must emulate.

As a community, we must move beyond the lower rungs of Maslow’s hierarchy — preoccupation with mere survival — and elevate ourselves toward self-actualisation. Our host countries provide infrastructure of good governance, rule of law, and accountability. These are not merely benefits we enjoy; they are values we can internalise and eventually take back home to help shape a better Nigeria.

Reflecting on Immaculate Conception College itself, founded on discipline, structure, and excellence, ICCOBA must rise above tribalism and embrace a culture of growth and collaboration, as now seen in the UK. This is essential to remain true to our legacy.

Finally, we commend the outgoing president of ICCOBA UK for his sterling service in laying the foundation for this association. His pioneering efforts will remain a source of pride, and we are confident that the incoming president will build on this legacy, taking our association to even greater heights.
